ZeniMax Media last week filed a lawsuit against the South Korean corporation Samsung.
ZeniMax claims that the Samsung Gear VR virtual reality headset uses technology belonging to it and thereby violates the company’s intellectual property right.
The lawsuit claims that the technical solutions used in Gear VR were developed by the technical director of id Software (owned by ZeniMax Media since 2009) John Carmack in 2013.
With the help of Carmack, the former creative director of id Software, Matt Hooper, who then became the head of development at Oculus VR, gained access to this data, and Carmack’s achievements formed the basis of the Oculus Rift headset.
Since Samsung Gear VR uses technology provided by Oculus VR, ZeniMax Media demands that Samsung fully reimburse all losses and costs it incurred as a result of “misappropriation of intellectual property, unfair competition and unjustified enrichment at the expense of ZeniMax”, as well as to obtain a ban on such actions in the future.
In February 2017, ZeniMax Media sued Oculus VR for $500 million for copyright infringement and concealment of data about the origin of the Oculus product.
