We talked about the market for Android-based consoles with John Gargiulo, vice president of marketing at BlueStacks, which is launching the gamepop microconsole soon.
John GardiuloHello, John!
Listen, why did Ouya fail?
Hi! There are a large number of companies that are trying to explain to users that mobile games can be played on TV. To be honest, we are rooting for all of them and for the niche itself. And it seems to me that it’s still too early to talk about failure now. The current time can be compared with the birth of the console market in the early 1980s. All companies need to work together to develop the market, inform people about its existence, rather than compete with each other. We have high hopes for this market.
BlueStacks is going to offer two consoles to the market at onceOkay, let me restate the question: why do you think BlueStacks will show a better result than Ouya?
Again, I would not like to focus on what is better, what is worse, there is a long way ahead, what it should be – we are just figuring out. As for the advantages of our platform, the main one is content and management. We cooperate with such mobile companies as Glu, TinyCo, Com2uS. The control mechanics in our projects are also unique. We will announce it very soon.
BlueStacks PartnersHere you are talking about educating users, but many people already know about this.
I’m talking about the opportunity to play mobile games on TV. Many smartphones have the ability to connect to a TV. Why buy microconsoles for this?
The biggest problem is the delay. Apple TV has a Second Screen feature. And with its help, you can play, for example, Real Racing 3. However, wifi is used for communication, which is very, very slow. The second most important problem is mirroring. The same thing happens on the iPhone screen as on the TV screen – it’s distracting. The third problem is the lack of tactile sensations. You have to feel the tangible buttons and look at the TV for that total immersion.
Thanks for the interview!
