Pictured: Oscar ClarkResource develop-online.net I invited Oscar Clark, Unity evangelist and director of strategic development at Colossal Games, to talk about what a “good game designer” is.
He told what experience and skills are needed in this profession, and also gave a classification of specialists.
Oscar Clark believes that a good game designer is a combination of creative vision and logical thinking. A professional in this field is responsible for ensuring that the compromises that developers are forced to make do not “kill” the game.
However, the author of the article makes a reservation, this is only his vision of the profession. On his way, he met a completely different approach to the issue. In addition, Clark notes, the tasks of a game designer largely depend on what requirements the customer has for the game.
Clark, with a mild English humor, gives a classification of the types of game designers. It includes, for example, system designers – the embodiment of logic, walking computers with the thinking of an “evil QA-tester”, or visual designers – according to the author, overrated stars of the profession.
“A good game designer is the one that this project needs. Although this, of course, is not the answer to the question.”
