Epic Games has announced the release of the next version of Unreal Engine — 4.22. The update includes 174 improvements.

One of the main innovations of the engine was ray tracing in real time, which Epic Games has already shown at GDC 2019. The company demonstrated the feature in a video called Troll as part of the State of Unreal presentation.

Major improvements:

  • support for real-time ray tracing and path tracing (early access);
  • high-level rendering refactoring with optimized grid rendering;
  • instant integration of changes to C++ code in the build;
  • Streaming support for the HoloLens AR headset (via Wi-Fi via the Windows Mixed Reality plugin);
  • Visual Studio 2019 support.

A more detailed list of improvements is contained in the official Unreal Engine blog.
