The developers of Toca Boca children’s games were acquired by Spin Master, a manufacturer of physical toys from Canada.
The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.
The founders of the Swedish Toca Boca, Björn Jeffery and Emil Ovemar, said that they and Spin Master have a common view on how children’s apps should look like. As part of their joint work, they plan to realize their vision better and faster [than they would have done without the support of the new owner].
Toca Boca is a tasty morsel in the market of children’s apps and games. Over the five years of its existence, the Stockholm studio has managed to gain more than 140 million downloads, as well as acquire offices in San Francisco and Brooklyn.
Together with Toca Boca, the toy giant Spin Master, which earned more than $ 1 billion last year, acquired a sister Swedish studio Sago Mini, also specializing in the development of children’s applications. Both Toca Boca and Sago Mini were part of the Swedish media group Bonnier Group before their sale.
It is not known how much the new owners will influence the conduct of Toca Boca affairs. Why they needed a studio is also no answer. The giant may either want to strengthen the Toca brand in the production of physical games based on motives, or use the expertise of acquired teams to strengthen its own titles in digital markets.
