The size of online worlds often constrain the capacity of servers. London-based startup Improbable announced a year ago the SpatialOS cloud platform that solves this problem. The essence boils down to the possibility of supporting one world with “many servers and engines”. The platform coordinates a hive of microservers, called “workers”, who exchange data with each other and are constantly being rebuilt in order to support the operation of a large seamless world.

Currently, the platform supports only Unity, but integration with the Unreal Engine and games built in C#, C++ and Java is also planned. The first project launched on SpatialOS will be MMO Worlds Adrift from Bossa Studios about traveling between islands flying in the sky (the cover of the news is a screen from it).

Simultaneously with the announcement of the open alpha (it is free), the developers announced a partnership with Google, under which the companies are launching the SpatialOS Games Innovation Program next year. Developers admitted to it will receive the currency used inside the platform (Improbable Credits). It can be spent on paying for the use of SpatialOS and hosting games on Google Cloud.

You can get acquainted with the platform in detail and go through the tutorial for it at this link.
