September turned out to be one of the most eventful months of 2026, especially in terms of the variety of blockbuster releases on PC and consoles. More about the metrics of several dozen key releases can be found in our traditional segment.
Games discussed in this article:
- Revenue, sales, and other metrics of major September releases: Wardogs, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and more;
- Data on indie hits and mid-budget novelties: Graveyard Keeper 2, Dressmaker, Bombanana, Minecraft Dungeons II, and more;
- Most anticipated October releases based on wishlist counts: Phantom Blade Zero, Over the Hill, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, Emberville, and others.
To assess sales, revenue, and other metrics, we relied not only on official data from developers and publishers but also on information from third-party sources. These include Steam charts and data from analytics companies such as Gamalytic, GameDiscoverCo, and Sensor Tower (VG Insights). All figures presented in the article cover the period from each game's release date to September 30, 2026.
Last month, 2,845 new titles were released on Steam, up 74% compared to the same period in 2025. Of these, 504 (17.7%) are games with profile features like cards, badges, etc., which surpassed a certain minimum threshold in revenue and user numbers.
The 2,845 games represent another record for the number of releases on Steam in a single month. This year, the platform has already set its historical highs for the fourth time—and for the third consecutive time.
- All September releases collectively brought in over $356 million.
- The gross revenue of 27 projects (0.95%), excluding free-to-play titles and version 1.0 releases, exceeded one million dollars.
- 21 games sold more than 100,000 copies, and 152 exceeded a minimum of 10,000 copies sold.
- Of all September's new releases, 328 received more than 100 reviews, and 67 projects surpassed the 1,000-review mark.
Next, we'll examine the metrics of the main releases and supplement this information with data from the console markets in the UK (GfK) and Japan (Famitsu).
Wardogs — One of the Year's Biggest Blockbusters: Top-Grossing September Releases on Steam
Given the strong early access launch, the military tactical sandbox Wardogs confidently finished the month in first place. In 20 days, it earned over $110 million, and official sales in two and a half weeks exceeded 3 million copies.
Ultimately, the shooter from the British studio Bulkhead became the sixth release of 2026 with a box office of more than $100 million on Steam. The other five are Forza Horizon 6 ($184.6 million), Crimson Desert ($176.4 million), Resident Evil Requiem ($171.4 million), and Slay the Spire 2 ($147 million).
