The CEO of Square Enix told why the company focuses on paid mobile games. And why sets a high price for these projects.

Japanese publisher and developer Square Enix specializes mostly in paid games. Of the mobile games released in 2016, exactly half are premium. The price tag of most of the projects starts at $11.99. The most “budget” in this line is a collection of GO series games, which sells for $4.99.

Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda believes that focusing on premium projects at a variety of prices is the optimal policy for the company.

And for the market as a whole. A large number of different price offers “teaches” the user that you need to pay for content. And the better the game, the higher the price. This, Matsuda is sure, heals the market. The head of the company expects to shift the focus even more towards paid games in the future.

“I don’t think it would be great for the [mobile gaming] market if all games were free-to-play. Frituplay certainly plays a huge role in our business, but at the same time we need to redouble our efforts in the field of premium applications. For example, our Japanese development team makes excellent turn-based RPGs. We want to continue releasing projects in the same genre. And we want them to be expensive. We are not going to sell them at a discount. We produce content that deserves high price tags,” Matsuda said.

Recall that the other day it became known that the game Lara Croft GO (to which Matsuda refers) won the title of the most beautiful project of the year according to Apple. Which only confirms the words of the head of Square Enix.
