Minecraft: Education Edition is based on the already existing educational version of the Minecraft game – MinecraftEdu. The project was launched jointly by Finnish and American teachers in 2011. Microsoft bought out MinecraftEdu and is now preparing to restart.

According to the authors of the original project, Minecraft: Education Edition does not plan to radically change. The game will be an expanded version of MinecraftEdu. The project will receive a number of additions. This is a website for communication, an expanded map, a section for student portfolios, the ability to export and import worlds into the original Minecraft game, as well as several other improvements.

Microsoft has scheduled the release of Minecraft: Education Edition for the summer of 2016. Access to the game will cost $5 per year per student. Users will be able to run the game on both educational and home computers.
