October came out hot. $1.53 billion was spent on digital versions of console games. This is 80% more than a year earlier.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
At the same time, digital console sales have never exceeded the $1 billion mark in history.
Such data was shared by SuperData in a recent report. According to her assessment, the main drivers of sales were three projects:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII sold 4.2 million copies on consoles. Before that, no game was sold on consoles with such a circulation in figures for a month.
- Red Dead Redemption 2, which was released at the end of October, managed to sell 4 million copies in six days. And, most likely, by the end of November, it will show several world records in terms of sales. By the way, 67% of its copies sold were on PS4.
- Fortnite moved from first place to third in the top of the highest-grossing console games of the month compared to September, but at the same time showed a twentyfold (!) increase in revenue compared to October last year (as far as can be understood from the report, across all platforms).
At the same time, SuperData notes that Overwatch is not doing well. The project is not among the top ten highest-grossing games on either PC or consoles. And for the fifth month in a row, its results are worse than those of last year. This October, they were 20% lower than last year.
