The new version of Ubuntu 19.10 will not support the Steam launcher. And there is a chance that GOG and other clients will also face problems due to the new OS build.
In version 19.10 of the specified Linux distribution, updates for the 32-bit x86 architecture will be canceled. It is this architecture that Steam and partly GOG use, Engadget writes.
In this regard, Valve announced that the creators of Steam are considering switching to another distribution for Linux. Although they will do everything possible to “minimize the chance of breakage for existing users.” Note that many Linux games on Steam work in 64-bit distributions, but only with 32-bit packages.
Due to the fact that Steam will stop supporting Ubuntu, Linux users on Steam may have compatibility issues. However, we note that, according to Phoronix, Linux players in the store are no more than 1%.
As for GOG, CD Projekt has not commented on the situation yet. But Canonical, the authors of Ubuntu, are already complaining about the difficulties with launching games in the store. The studio is considering the possibility of borrowing 32-bit libraries from Ubuntu version 18.04. But these components will not develop.
