Cliff Bleszinski, known for his work on the Unreal and Gears of War series, analyzed the failure of the Boss Key studio he created. Now the game designer wants to return to the industry, inspired by the success of small games like Among Us and Fall Guys.Blesinski is working on a memoir about his career, which spans 20 years at Epic Games and work on the company’s classic titles.

Now the game designer is writing a chapter about the Boss Key Productions studio he created in 2014, which closed four years later.

In a big post on Facebook, Blesinski analyzed the mistakes he made as the head of the company.

  • Initially, Cliff wanted to make a simple arena shooter in the style of UT and Quake. However, he succumbed to the desire of colleagues to develop a game in the popular MOBA genre at that time.Blesinski tried to make LawBreakers (the studio’s first project) as unlike Overwatch as possible, but the market was already oversaturated with heroic shooters.
  • One of the mistakes was the release of the game on PS4 instead of Xbox, where Blesinski already had a fan base;
  • The canceled Radical Heights fritupley shooter could have saved the studio, but it stood out weakly against the background of other battle royales on the market and also lost to the leaders of the genre.
  • After closing Boss Key and leaving the gaming industry, Blesinski began producing musicals.

However, now the game designer has a desire to return to development again. This time he is thinking of creating a small low-budget game.

“The success of Fall Guys and Among Us gives me hope that not all games should be crazy AAA projects with $100-million budgets, overworking which destroys families and the psyche,” writes Blesinski.

He puts Touryst for the Nintendo Switch in the category of such small projects. Cliff experienced similar emotions after the release of Minecraft, which became successful despite the simple graphics.
