There was a story that Tencent invested in the South Korean developer Bluehole Studio, who created the main blockbuster of this summer – the online shooter Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). The developer refutes the story.
Information about the deal originally appeared on the pages of the Chinese edition of Jiemian News. According to him, initially Tencent planned to acquire the developer entirely, but Bluehole Studio rejected such an offer.
Dot Esports requested a comment from the developer and received a response that Tencent did not invest in Bluehole Studio. “This information is not reliable. Tencent did not invest in Bluehole Studio,” the authors of PUBG told the esports publication.
Despite the refutation, the news quite fits into the framework of Tencent’s strategy, which is buying up major players in the gaming market today. Recall that she owns Riot Games, Supercell, as well as shares in Glu Mobile, Pocket Gems, Frontier Developments and Epic Games. In addition, this summer she showed interest in acquiring Rovio.
Bluehole Studio is a tasty morsel on the market today. Sales of her PUBG on July 20 reached 5 million, online games on Steam on August 14 amounted to 600 thousand (only DOTA 2 has more). At the same time, the game has not yet been released from early access.
