The authors of the game about deadly pandemics Plague Inc. have joined the fight against the coronavirus. They transferred $250 thousand to organizations that are looking for a vaccine against COVID-19.

The developers of Ndemic Creations told about this in an appeal to the players on the official website.

The company has divided a quarter of a million dollars between the Epidemic Preparedness Coalition (CEPI) and the World Health Organization fund fighting COVID-19.

“Eight years ago, I didn’t think that the real world would become like Plague Inc. or that Plague Inc. will help many players survive a real pandemic,” said James Vaughan, creator of Plague Inc. “We are proud to be able to support the vital activities of CEPI and WHO while they are looking for a vaccine against COVID—19.”

This is not the first time that Ndemic Creations is donating to fight dangerous viruses. In 2015, at the height of the Ebola epidemic, developers raised $76,000 as part of a charity event. This money was transferred to the healthcare organization.

Both in the case of Ebola and COVID-19, the Plague Inc. game has attracted increased attention. At the end of January 2020, the title became the most downloaded iOS app in China, where the coronavirus outbreak originated. Later, the Chinese regulator removed the game from the store: it allegedly did not comply with censorship. But the authorities could also decide that the game contributes to the spread of panic.

At the same time, large medical organizations see potential benefits in Plague Inc. Now Ndemic Creations, with the support of WHO and the Global Outbreak Alert Network (GOARN), is developing a new game mode. In it, players will not spread viruses, but, on the contrary, fight them. The user will have to deal with sorting people, quarantines, the work of health systems.

This new mode will be made free for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Its release date has not yet been announced.

Plague Inc. is a strategy game in the genre of a biological simulator. It is available on mobile, PC and current generation consoles.

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a new coronavirus. As of March 25, the number of infected reached 408 thousand, 18 thousand people died. The pandemic forced the authorities of many countries to declare a total quarantine.

We should add that a number of gaming companies are also helping to fight the virus. For example, MYTONA and its partners donated $500,000 to Yakut hospitals. Playtika also organized food delivery for quarantined residents of Israel and Eastern Europe.
