In 2018, the turnover of the general gaming market of Australia and New Zealand has grown significantly. It amounted to $3.1 billion. The Australian segment has achieved particular success here.

This data was published by the Australian organization Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA).

The Australian Market

  • Consumers spent $2.8 billion on video games per year. This market grew by a quarter at once. Such growth in IGEA is called “phenomenal”.
  • Sales of digital copies of games have risen strongly — by 39% (up to $ 2 billion). Such growth was primarily provided by the sale of DLC, “season passes”, cosmetic items. In-game purchases in 2018 were 190% more profitable than in 2017.
  • But the revenue from boxed versions rose slightly — by 0.2% (to $ 810 million).

According to Newzoo’s early forecasts, the total revenue of the Australian gaming industry in 2018 was expected to be $1.3 billion. Nevertheless, according to IGEA calculations, the actual turnover significantly exceeded the estimated one.

New Zealand Market

  • The turnover reached a record level for the industry — $355.6 million. This is 21% more than in 2017.
  • Physical and digital sales grew by 21% simultaneously. The first — up to $93 million, the second — up to $263.1 million.
  • IGEA also noted the increased interest of New Zealanders in accessories for consoles and, in principle, gaming equipment.
