The deal between Microsoft and ZeniMax Media officially ended yesterday. On this occasion, Phil Spencer finally directly answered the question that has been worrying since September: what will happen to the games of the acquired company? He did not open all the cards, but confirmed that at least some of the new games from Bethesda will indeed be released exclusively for PC and Xbox.
Microsoft announced the purchase of ZeniMax for $7.5 billion in September last year. Since then, the corporation has been asked more than once whether ZeniMax-owned studios’ games will continue to be released outside Microsoft services. There was no concrete answer until this moment.
Spencer commented on the situation on the Xbox Wire portal immediately after the completion of the transaction between the companies.
Now that everything is official, we can start working together and provide gamers with more great games. <...> Xbox, PC and Game Pass consoles will be the most suitable place for Bethesda projects. This also applies to some of Bethesda's new products, which will be exclusives for PC and Xbox.
Head of the Xbox brand
Spencer added that this week the Xbox Game Pass will be replenished with several Bethesda titles. He did not specify which ones.
The head of Xbox did not disclose plans for the future of games from other studios included in ZeniMax. According to him, details about this will appear within a year. Recall that in addition to Bethesda, the gaming concern also owns assets of id Software, Arkane, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, Roundhouse Studios, ZeniMax Online Studios and MachineGames.
