The creators of the free-play action movie Loadout from the Edge of Reality studio have announced the imminent end of the project. The reason was the new regulation on user data protection (GDPR) for EU countries. Edge of Reality said that adjusting the game to the GDPR requirements would cost them too much, so it’s easier to close Loadout.
According to a representative of Edge of Reality, the main audience of their game is in Europe.
The company explained that due to GDPR, they will no longer be able to host the game on cloud servers. With the current income from the game, the studio cannot afford to set up its own servers.
“It’s sad to realize that small game studios simply don’t have the resources to meet the GDPR requirements. We have always ensured the safety of our players’ personal data, but we cannot meet the standards of the new law,” Edge of Reality said in a statement.
Loadout servers will stop working on May 24, the day before the data protection law comes into force.
PC Gamer indicates that the server hosting provider for Loadout also announced the imminent closure. The publication suggests that this may be related to GDPR.
This is the second game project that is being closed due to the introduction of GDPR. On April 29, Uber Entertainment studio announced the shutdown of the servers of the MOBA action movie Super MNC.
