The game is exclusive to the Nintendo Switch, released last July.
Square Enix has shipped 1.5 million copies of Octopath Traveler as of January this year. This includes both physical and digital copies, Gematsu reports.
Having included physical copies in the amount of shipments, the publisher did not specify whether both deliveries and sales are implied. In some cases, the term “shipped” is used to refer only to the delivery of the game to stores.
Octopath Traveler made a splash on the release. Its cartridges for the Nintendo hybrid console were sold out in the first hours — both in Japan and in several European countries. In the release month, this classic Japanese role-playing game with an unusual visual style became the highest-grossing in the United States. And by August, its worldwide shipments exceeded 1 million copies. A powerful result for an exclusive retro jRPG created within the framework of the new IP.
Square Enix has announced that this year the game will receive a free prequel for mobile devices. But this only applies to Japan. When the new product will enter the global market, it is not reported.
