More than a billion women around the world actively play video games. Moreover, the ratio of players among women and men is about the same: there are 46% of the former. These and other interesting facts were revealed by the Newzoo study.

Newzoo analysts have divided gamers into eight different types. The types were allocated according to the preferences of the players and the time they spend on games and other activities related to the industry. The data was obtained in 30 key markets.

The researchers also found out how many women and men are in each of these groups. And, accordingly, which gaming preferences are most common among the two sexes.

First, we will go through all the groups, and then we will tell you about the distribution of women and men among them.

Eight groups of players (according to Newzoo)

  • Time killers (27%). People who spend their time playing games (most often on mobile phones).
  • Cloud players (19%). They try to buy games at a discount or even for free, they spend only on equipment — and then, if necessary. First of all, Google Stadia and similar sites can focus on them.
  • Popcorn lovers (13%). They love to play, but even more they like to watch game reviews and streams on YouTube, Twitch, etc. There are a lot of children from 10 years old in this category.
  • Avid gamers (13%). They spend a lot of time and money on games.*.
  • Versatile players (9%). They like to watch video game content and play independently to the same extent.
  • Fans of gaming devices (9%). For the most part, they follow trends and news on the gaming device market, and strive to optimize their own devices for games.
  • Viewers (6%). They almost never play themselves, but they like to watch others play. This also applies to esports broadcasts.
  • Regular players (4%). On the contrary, they almost never watch other people’s games, but they play themselves.

* Newzoo debunked the myth that avid gamers are mostly teenagers. It turned out that the largest proportion of avid gamers are men aged 21-35 years, and another 19% of them are men from 26 to 30 years old. Plus, most of the people in this category already have children.

Women and men in these groups

Male players are often “cloud players”, “time killers” and “avid players”. Among female gamers, “time killers” are the most common. There are a third of such women, and most of them are in the age category from 51 to 65 years.

Also, many women belong to the categories of “cloud players” and “popcorn lovers”. But there are also “avid players” among women. Most often these are girls aged from 26 to 30 years. Analysts believe that if these gamers, as they get older, continue to play and retain the same preferences, then the percentage of “time killers” among women may significantly decrease.

Note that “ordinary players” are the minimum number of people among both men (5%) and women (3%).
