Senator of the Parliament of the Russian Federation Elena Mizulina stated the need to regulate computer games. According to her, certain projects should be labeled “16+” and “18+”.

“Of particular concern is the dominance of computer games with scenes of cruelty and violence.

Now children of all ages have unhindered access to them. It is quite obvious that all computer games should have an age marking. In the case of computer games of a certain orientation, the marking should be expanded to “16+” and “18+”. This issue will be put up for public discussion with the expert community,” Mizulina said.

About which genres of games should be marked, Mizulina did not specify. According to her, “projects [for young people] should not contain extremist information and promote a negative image of Russia!”.

The practice of age marking is widespread abroad. That’s just it concerns, as a rule, exclusively those topics that can somehow damage the child’s psyche.

Mizulina’s statement appeared in connection with yesterday’s (February 17) comment by the head of Roskomnadzor Alexander Zharov about the work of the service on the regulation of online games.

Recall, Zharov noted that online games are a state-level issue, since “we know from the media a sufficient number of stories about the tragedies that gambling addiction has led to.” Plus, he hinted that games, as isolated ecosystems, can be used to prepare terrorist attacks (that is, used as an alternative to messengers). Because of this, Roskomnadzor undertook to “develop an approach to regulating this issue.”
