The owners of the Marmalade SDK mobile game development engine have announced that they are ceasing to invest in it. The main reason is the increased competition in recent years. Most gaming teams today prefer to use Unity and Unreal.
This was announced on the official website of the engine. It is also noted there that the developers of the engine failed to make a successful business based on the product.
“We were sure that the Marmalade SDK surpasses Unity in performance and supports mobile platforms better than the Unreal Engine,” the appeal says. “But the world is changing at such a rapid rate. Unity has dedicated the latest updates to performance issues, and Unreal Engine has done a great job of supporting modern mobile platforms.”
Marmalade SDK is not dying for the first time. In the fall of 2016, its developer Marmalade Technologies, who today focused on the development of casual games, announced that he was stopping work on the product.
Then the engine was saved by the Japanese service provider GMO Cloud, which acquired exclusive rights to support and development Marmalade SDK. But now he refuses to further develop the solution. So maybe now the history of the engine is finally over.
Recall that games such as Cut the Rope, Doodle Jump, Peggle, Plants vs. Zombies, Planet of Gems and many others were developed on the basis of the Marmalade SDK.
