The authors of Candy Crush Saga have changed the license type of one of their technical solutions. Since today, the “sources” of the Defold engine have become available to developers.

According to the new licensing rules, developers can:

  • extract any profit from programs developed on the engine;
  • profit from any plugin or tool developed for Defold;
  • modify Defold without restrictions and without the need to share this data with anyone;
  • freely distribute the modified version of Defold (but only on a non-commercial basis).

Also, as part of the new rules, developers are given access to all patents related to Defold.

King hopes that the translation of the engine into a new format will attract the attention of external teams to it, allow it to grow and become better.

As part of the current event, King also launched The Defold Foundation. This organization is listed as the owner of the engine. Among its goals as an institution is to support the community.

Recall that Defold is a free cross—platform engine designed to create two-dimensional games. It supports writing scripts in Lua and contains an editor. It has been in development for about 10 years. One of the games made on it is Blossom Blast Saga.

King acquired Defold in 2014, and actively began to promote it in 2016. She even hired Oleg Pridyuk, who had previously actively promoted Unity, as his evangelist.

Updated:

Initially, we made a mistake when checking the facts and wrote that not a single hit was released. This statement is not true. The Belarusian Family Island project was developed at Defold, whose monthly revenue is about $ 2 million.
