At the GamesBeat Summit event for game developers in Sausalito, Unity CEO John Riccitiello talked about what problems the game creator community has and what to do about it.

Riccitello started with an overview of the achievements. The number of downloads of mobile games collected on Unity reaches 800 million per month. However, this, he believes, is not the limit.

Riccitello stated that Unity should be the “default choice” – due to its simplicity and versatility. In other words, we plan to make the technology available to any developer, regardless of his knowledge and skills.

The company is going to create an improved monetization system to change the situation in which developers receive a limited amount of revenue from each sale of the game.

“We want Unity to be everyone’s choice, regardless of whether they are trying to create a fancy PC game or developing a 2D title for mobile. I believe that one of the main difficulties faced by developers is to find an audience – and monetize it. We have a huge team working on a simple problem, which is that game creators get only 30 cents from every dollar… We want them to get 100 cents on the dollar,” Riccitello said.

Developers can no longer afford to lose revenue from scratch.

“The vast majority of independent developers are losing money today, and frankly, the same thing is happening with large publishers and their huge projects, and all because they are no longer able to be fully effective,” he stressed.

There is another difficulty. Riccitello believes that it lies in the fact that each platform will be improved technologically, and the entry threshold for each will only increase. Accordingly, development costs will increase – and revenue will fall. Without the universal platform that Riccitello sees Unity as, the future of the developer community is in doubt.

“Unity <…> is building a bridge. Simplifies, if you want, this platform complexity and increases the number of monetization opportunities,” he concluded.
