The Russian retail market of PC games decreased by almost half in 2015, as, indeed, the domestic console market.
This was told by the company “M.Video” in its analytical review of the Russian consumer electronics market.
Before we talk about games, let’s take a look at the mobile device market.
The smartphone market in monetary terms grew by 9% in 2015 to 267 billion rubles. But at the same time, it fell by 5% to 26.2 million units sold. Against the background of the crisis – not such a serious fall.
If we talk about platforms, then Android showed itself best here. Sales of Android smartphones in the market increased by 4 percentage points. Sales of iPhone devices fell by 3 percentage points. This is quite understandable, since the entire line has moved to the flagship segment. Sales of smartphones with Windows Phone on board increased by 1.6 percentage points.
The tablet market in Russia has sunk very much. In monetary terms, the drop was 31% – up to 51.3 billion rubles, in unit terms 30% – up to 6.6 million gadgets sold. We believe that three factors contributed to this:
- a tablet does not belong to essential goods (unlike a smartphone), which, against the background of the crisis, cannot but affect sales;
- tablets have a long service life, they are changed once every few years;
- in the early years, while tablets were new, interest in them was higher than the real need for them. There is no such interest now.
The market of game consoles in Russia has also significantly declined over the past year. And if in monetary terms the drop was 18% (the market shrank to 8.6 billion rubles), then in the piece a giant 40% (up to 435 thousand pieces). Several factors are also associated with this.
Consoles, like tablets, are not essential goods. Therefore, with the general unfavorable economic situation on the market, it was quite expected to expect a reduction in sales. Especially against the background of the devaluation of the ruble currency, as a result of which the average console price in Russia increased by 33% last year. Plus, according to Nikita Tikhvinsky, head of the Media and Entertainment department at M.Video, there is a “certain saturation of the market” in the market, because the last generation of consoles was introduced back in 2013-2014.
In unit terms, PlayStation 4 is the leader in sales in Russia (44% of the market). In second place – Xbox 360 (24% of the market). In the third position is PlaySation 3 (19% of the market).
Retail sales of console games also declined – by 4% in monetary terms and by 22% in units.
The leaders of sales in Russia were last year in unit terms “The Witcher 3” on PlayStation 4, Minecraft – on Xbox One.
The retail market of PC games also decreased significantly last year – by 19% in monetary terms, by 45% in unit. The reason for this is no longer the crisis, but the transition to digital consumption of game content by the target audience.
GTA V became the sales leader among PC games in 2015 .
