Hyper Light Drifter producer and designer Teddy Dief is returning to indie development. He decided to leave the Montreal division of Square Enix after the cancellation of his new project.
Teddy announced his retirement from the position of creative producer in his blog. According to him, this is his own decision. He could, like those who worked with him on a closed project, stay, but did not want to.
My team has been working on a game that I would really like to share with you. But the studio's business strategy has changed and our project, unfortunately, has turned out to be incompatible with it. Thank God, my talented colleagues have not lost their places and are now attached to other projects. But due to the change of course by the company and the loss of the project, I no longer believe that this is the place for me where I could do the projects I aspire to.
Former creative producer of Square Enix Montreal
In the near future, he plans to conduct a 48–hour stream on the passage of Chrono Trigger and return to Los Angeles.
Teddy joined Square Enix Montreal in the spring of 2016. From that moment on, he led a small team of nine employees in the Canadian studio.
Prior to that, he worked in the indie studio Heart Machine, known for the role-playing project Hyper Light Drifter. The number of users of the latter only on Steam is more than 500 thousand.
