In Europe, age ratings for video games will start to be enforced more strictly. We've prepared a detailed analysis of the new PEGI rules, which largely rely on the German organization USK's system, with examples of games and existing cases of rating increases.

Topics covered in this article:

  • new PEGI criteria: what they involve and which games could face an 18+ rating;
  • sports simulators, gacha games, mobile casual hits: which games the new rules will affect and how their ratings might change;
  • Germany's experience in revising age ratings: nearly an exact copy of the new PEGI system;
  • the impact of German rules on games, as well as the special attention to platforms like Roblox;
  • new PEGI rules in the context of the European gaming market.

What happened?

On March 12, the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) organization introduced four new criteria for assigning age ratings to video games. These criteria concern:

  • in-game purchases;
  • paid random items;
  • player engagement strategies (characterized as “play-by-appointment”);
  • online safety.

Let's go through the main changes.
