Funcom’s annual profit exceeded $10 million. This is a record for a publisher

Last year was the most profitable in the history of the Norwegian Funcom. And during this time, the publisher has made several major deals. He told about this in the report for the fourth quarter of 2018 and for the whole year.

The company achieved good results mainly thanks to two projects. Firstly, this is Conan Exiles, which sold 1 million copies in early access. Secondly, it is Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, whose successes are actively celebrated by Funcom itself.

2018 is our best year to date. It was marked by the release of Conan Exiles, the acquisition of 50% of the rights to Conan IP and other intellectual property, the investment of the Swedbank Robur fund in the development of our publishing strategy and the launch of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden — our first game within this strategy.

Quarterly figures

  • Funcom’s revenue reached $8.3 million. Revenue growth in annual terms amounted to 166%.
  • Operating profit (EBIT) for the quarter is $1.4 million. This is 841% more than in the same quarter of 2017. Then the company was in the red. Its loss was $453 thousand.
  • The release of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden had a good effect on financial indicators. This turn-based tactical RPG, released in early December, strengthened Funcom’s position as a publisher.

Figures for the whole year

  • Funcom’s annual revenue was $33.7 million. This is 46% more than in 2017.
  • Also, 2018 brought a record operating profit (EBIT): $10.1 million, which is 53% more than the result of 2017.

Successes and future plans of Funcom

  • In 2018, the company entered into an exclusive partnership with Legendary Entertainment. Thanks to this, Funcom received the rights to create at least three IP Dune games (Frank Herbert’s Dune universe). The first project is a multiplayer game in the open world.
  • In addition, the company acquired 50.1% of ZPX. This studio previously assisted Funcom in the development of Conan Exiles and other projects. Speaking of the Conan universe: now Funcom is preparing Conan Unconquered (released this year) and an unnamed singleplayer project. She will also have a cooperative shooter based on IP Heroic Signatures.
  • Funcom also has plans for a project on Funcom IP from the Rock Pocket Games studio. It will be released this year, on Halloween.
