Jennifer Chan, Head of Business Development at Google Play Apps & Games, believes that mobile publishers need to pay attention to Hong Kong in search of high profits.
There are several reasons why Chan considers Hong Kong attractive for the gaming industry.
The first is an extensive user base: 79% of the district’s population are smartphone owners. This is the third result in the Asia-Pacific region after Singapore and South Korea.
Hong Kong has a high concentration of hardcore gamers and the highest ARPPU in the world.
Plus, the local audience has fairly predictable tastes. Despite the fact that the names of games in the top charts are changing, popular genres remain the same. Gamers in Hong Kong love MMORPGs, preferably about martial arts.

In addition, Hong Kong gamers play popular titles all over the world for a long time.
Here is a list of games that have been in the local Google Play top for a year or longer:
- Puzzles and Dragons;
- Clash of Clans;
- Clash of Kings;
- Candy Crush Saga;
- Summoners War;
- Ace Fishing.
Chan notes that there is a special category of gamers in Hong Kong: those who prefer Japanese mobile games. These users prefer to play games in Japanese and make purchases using special gift cards popular in Japanese gaming. Chan advises: to get additional revenue from a Japanese game or a project on a Japanese popular franchise, you can publish them in Hong Kong.
“For developers who are planning a global launch, I recommend considering Hong Kong – there is a lively community and loyal, actively dancing gamers in this small city,” Chan sums up.
