Artificial intelligence has been integrated into the RetroArch emulator of classic games. And now the program supports instant translation of Japanese text into English.

AI is able to both create a dialog box with the replacement of Japanese characters with English text, and read the translation by voice. All this is at the touch of a button, writes VentureBeat.

There is one difference between voice and text mode. The reading of the text takes place without interrupting the game. And with text translation, the game is paused so that the user has time to read it. For the AI service to work, you need to specify the URL of the server on a local or public network.

Simultaneous translation from Japanese, for obvious reasons, is more in demand than long-term fan translations or the help of Google Translate. Thus, the AI in RetroArch opens up access to a lot of interesting projects for fans of retro games.

The authors of RetroArch, LibRetro, have been looking for a person capable of embedding such a service in an emulator for some time. According to the team’s blog, an unnamed developer helped them implement the idea.
