Deep learning technology continues to prove its usefulness in improving graphics. Recently, the ESRGAN neural network helped improve the image in The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind by adding detail to textures. Now similar tools have made it possible to improve The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII

The team of modders at the Final Fantasy Qhimm forum promises to release high-resolution textures for Final Fantasy VII by the end of January. Their mod was named Final Fantasy VII HD Field Mod, according to VentureBeat.

On top — the original textures of Final Fantasy VII. Below are the textures of the Field Mod.
To improve the image, modders used AI Gigapixel.

This is a software tool that works using machine learning.

To “teach” the texture processing tool, the developers provided AI Gigapixel with two images: one in extremely low resolution, the other in HD. The task of the program was to make the second image from the first, detailing the picture. The process needed to be repeated several times.

Note that in December, the same Gigapixel AI used the hidfan modder to improve the image in the original DOOM. He noted that he had to manually remove artifacts from the processed images.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Nvidia itself took over the improvement of graphics in this game.

This company has the rights to release games for Wii U on the Nvidia Shield TV platform. These rights apply only to China.

Nvidia Shield supports 4K. Of course, retro games look bad on a modern 4K monitor. Therefore, Nvidia has improved 4400 textures from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for Chinese Nvidia Shield owners. The company used deep learning technologies.

В сравнении с игрой The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, которую выпустила Nintendo, обновленные текстуры от Nvidia немного уступают в качестве. Но все равно они выглядят значительно лучше оригинальных.

The graphics update is free for all Chinese Shield users.

Nvidia did not specify whether it plans to improve any other Nintendo game.
