As part of the recently completed GamesBeat 2015, the senior vice president of Disney Mobile Games spoke about the company’s desire to be a publisher of third-party projects, as well as the fact that the company’s gaming division is now focused on mobile.
Chris Heatherly, according to VentureBeat, said that the company has embarked on a new path for working with third-party teams, which the vice president calls “co-development”. The bottom line is that a third-party team makes the game under license, and Disney publishes it and promotes it.
As a successful example of a detailed “joint development”, Heveley called Frozen Free Fall, which was developed by the independent studio Genera. By the way, now the portfolio of the latter also includes such mobile titles as Star Trek: Wrath of Gems, Run Forrest Run and Kingcraft: Puzzle Adventures.
So, in general, the company is currently working on the publishing side of its business, within which it aims to work specifically with licensees. The role of the latter can be played by both large companies and those who are distinguished by talent, who offer excellent assets.
The second point we want to focus on is Disney’s focus on mobile and mobile platforms (by the way, the company is basically doing everything on Unity now, wanting to standardize the tools between companies, something is being done on Unreal, but these are special cases). At least, that’s what Heveley said. Yes, now they are impressed with Apple TV and Android TV, and VR is the platform within which you already need to experiment, learn to work with it, but right now it’s not relevant, it’s a “long game,” Heveley noted.
