In the second quarter of 2014, the Google Play mobile app store surpassed the App Store by 60% in terms of installations, App Annie reported in its latest report.
Recall that in the first quarter Google Play bypassed the “apple” store by 45%, a year ago the difference was only 10%. Three regions should be thanked for the high growth dynamics: Brazil, Thailand and India.
The latter not only entered the top three regions in terms of downloads in the world, but also turned out to be the fastest growing market in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of smartphone shipments. However, despite this, the penetration rate of these devices is still very low – about 10%.
As for the global revenue situation: The App Store generates 80% more money than Google Play. The main drivers of iOS growth are China and Japan, and Taiwan, Kuwait and Turkey also demonstrate good growth rates (30% per quarter).
But, as already mentioned, China is the most interesting region in this regard. Despite the fact that it is still only in third place in the world in terms of income (after the USA and Japan), it will most likely soon be higher. In the second quarter of 2014, Apple sold $10 billion worth of devices in China. In turn, revenue from iOS grew by 20% in the quarter.
