App Annie recently published a report on the mobile app market for the third quarter of 2014. We analyze it in detail.
The main figures are, of course, a comparison of downloads and revenues of the two main mobile app stores.
So, if we take downloads to the App Store for 100%, then the number of installations from Google Play is 60% more (we remind you that this is without taking into account such an important Android market for the ecosystem as China, that is, in fact, downloads from Android stores can be many times higher than those from the App Store). But the difference in the number of installations between the markets has not changed since the second quarter. In July, we wrote about the same difference of 60%.
For money, nothing drastic has happened: Google Play continues to act as a catch-up. The App Store surpasses it in revenue by 60%. However, a quarter ago the gap was significantly larger – by 80%. So, it turns out that we can talk about the qualitative growth of the platform in terms of monetization.
According to App Annie, messengers have become one of the main drivers of market growth in terms of downloads.
- Facebook Messenger, Facebook forced and continues to force you to install;
- Foursquare’s equally coldly received Swarm;
- the hike that literally blew up the Indian market;
- and Japanese LINE.

As for the catalyst for revenue growth, games are on Google Play. In the US, revenue grew largely thanks to the Game of War – Fire Age, Boom Beach and Clash of Clans. Kim Kardashian: Hollywood and Bubble Witch 2 Saga also made a significant contribution.
What is curious: in South Korea, Google Play revenues also grew largely thanks to Clash of Clans, although, of course, there was no local support in the face of Monster Taming, Summoners War and Dragon Guard.
If we talk about the top countries in terms of downloads/revenue from the App Store and Google Play, then the situation has persisted since last quarter.
In terms of downloads from the App Store, the USA, China, Japan, Great Britain and Russia are ahead of the whole planet.
But App Annie does not say exactly how many installations each of these countries generates, but it would be very interesting to see.
In terms of income, the top looks very similar, but there is no Russia in the top five, instead Australia. Who would be surprised.
There are many “developing” countries in the top of the leading countries for downloading from Google Play, namely: Brazil, India and Russia. In the first place, however, the United States, in the last – South Korea.
The top Google Play revenue looks the most interesting way. In addition to Japan, the USA and South Korea, Germany and Taiwan can be found in it.
I won’t tell you about the tops of the most popular and profitable types of applications on the App Store / Google Play, everything is clear here: games are in the first place everywhere.
