The Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group of the Chinese Alibaba Corporation plans to create a business group engaged in the creation of video games.
Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group announced the opening of a new business line after it acquired the online game developer studio EJoy at the end of September.
Note that the corporation does not disclose the amount of the transaction and the composition of the business group.
The new structure will be headed by the founder of the EJoy studio Zhang Zhonghui (Zhan Zhonghui). Previously, he was the chief operating officer of the Chinese Internet company NetEase. In 2011, Zhonghui left his post and opened EJoy, which later became a major game developer with a staff of 4 thousand employees.
Alibaba has previously invested in various gaming projects. The organization invested $145 million in a global network for mobile games, supported esports competitions in China and other initiatives related to the gaming industry.
Interestingly, the founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, once stated that “he would rather starve than earn money from games.” But a few years ago, Ma changed his point of view.
