In what position is the genre of turn-based strategies now, said the CEO of Triumph Studios Lennart Sas, who was at the origins of the Age of Wonders series. App2Top.ru made a squeeze from an interview for VentureBeat.
Turn-based strategies have come a long way from the first Civilization and XCOM, and today this genre is showing itself perfectly, says Sas. As an example, he cited the current successes of the Age of Wonders series, in particular, the third part. According to him, sales of Age of Wonders III are “a couple hundred percent higher” than sales of Age of Wonders games in the 90s and noughties.
The audience has greatly increased due to digital distribution. They (turn-based strategies) have become much more accessible compared to the old days, when there was not much space on the shelves, but at the same time a lot of niche titles came out. Now is a very good time for turn-based strategies.

At the same time, Sas, unlike VentureBeat journalists, is convinced that the positions of this genre are strong not only in Europe. This is indicated by approximately the same sales figures for major games of this genre in the European and American markets, he said. However, Sas did not name specific games to confirm his words.
Triumph Studio independently published Age of Wonders III in 2014. Over 500 thousand copies of the game have been sold in two years. After that, Paradox Interactive became interested in the studio and bought it out. At the same time, Triumph has retained great creative freedom in creating its projects.
