From April 1 to July 31, 2.5 billion downloads of games created on Unity were made, – the authors of the engine said in the first issue of their own report “By the numbers“.
The number of unique devices on which these games were delivered is a bit much smaller, but still impressive – 1.1 billion. But we were personally impressed by the third published figure. Similar figures were generated by 174 thousand games created by that time, whose development took place using the Unity package.
However, the real value is, of course, not this information. Of greater interest is the download segmentation table by unique devices. It demonstrates a real slice of the popularity of devices. But, before moving on to it, it’s still worth noting that of the above 2.5 billion downloads, 74% were on Android devices, and 17% were on iOS gadgets (while keeping in mind that the last 17% still earn more money than games downloaded from Google Play).
As for the most popular devices for games, among Android, the palm is for, surprise, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablet, and among iOS devices, the iPhone 5S is such. We mean that optimizing your games, do not forget about their optimization about the most popular gadgets on the market.
In this context, the table of top Android vendors is also of interest, demonstrating how many devices account for each manufacturer from the total number, as well as the most popular gadget of each of them.
A little below is also interesting and up-to-date information about the unique number of active iOS gadgets on which a game created on Unity has been installed at least once. It is clear that the numbers presented do not demonstrate the exact number of active Apple devices in general, but are an excellent representation of the popularity of each of the commercially available devices.
Interest is also aroused by the information that iOS generates most of the downloads in the top 10 markets. Moreover, about half of iOS installations come from three regions: the USA, China and Japan. At the same time, Android’s popularity is more diversified. The top three regions (China, USA and Brazil) account for only 40% of all downloads.
In the two tables below, you can see the segmentation of downloads by region. And there are a lot of very interesting things here. For example, in terms of iOS installations, Russia is not significantly behind Canada, but in terms of Android downloads, although it ranks fourth in the world, it is significantly behind Brazil.
And, of course, it clearly shows which markets really need to pay attention to now (hint: Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Brazil and Turkey).
