The release of a set of tools for Dota 2 has become a source of speculation around the possible appearance of Source 2.

It all started with the fact that Valve published the alpha version of Dota 2 Workshop Tools. The toolkit is designed for those fans of the game who want to create original mods and maps based on Dota.

The first users of the package, after digging into its directories, found that a number of system files and folders received new names (roughly speaking, instead of source.dll , now everywhere source2.dll ). Based on this, as well as the fact that the code allows you to load various dlls and render various assets (for example, vmaps is rendered worldrenderer.dll and so on), which the original Source never allowed, and the console was completely updated, and an assumption was made: we have the components of the new engine in front of us.

Whether this is true or not, it is hardly possible to say before the official announcement.

Why Valve would release a new full-fledged game engine if the company had simply upgraded the old one earlier is another question.

If the modders’ assumptions are correct, and Valve is preparing a full-fledged new version of Source, then one of the main reasons for its occurrence may well be the widespread distribution of mobile games that require a more flexible engine architecture than that of the original Source.

What do you think about Source on mobile platforms?
