Google, as part of its online event, shared new figures and tools for developing games on Android. Including for graphics optimization and cross-platform support.
The GoogleForGames online event ended yesterday, March 23. On it, the company announced the current indicators of the Android platform. Let’s look at them first.
Numbers
- Android has a daily audience of 2 billion people. The monthly audience of Google Play is also 2 billion people;
- Collectively, they spend 233 billion hours a month playing games;
- top Android games have 45% higher retention on day 7 than the market average;
- The Google Ads advertising network has provided 27 billion game installations for all time;
- A Google Play Pass subscription for $4.99 was purchased by “hundreds of millions of players.” The exact number is not called;
- game content on YouTube is watched by 200 million users every day. 50 billion hours of such videos are produced per year;
- 1700 titles from teams from 37 countries passed through the indie games accelerator launched by Google in 2019;
- Google’s global cloud infrastructure covers 22 regions. The connection of seven more has been announced.
Google also shared its forecast for the mobile gaming market. According to his calculations, the segment’s turnover will reach $100 billion by 2021. The market growth will be stimulated by Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and North Africa.

The Internet giant has launched a number of new services and extensions for game developers. Among them:
- new Android Studio Profilers feature for Android Studio 4.1 Canary. It demonstrates to developers how the code works in all versions of the Android operating system. It also allows you to detect memory leaks;
- Android GPU Inspector is a tool for optimizing graphics and rendering analysis. Increases the frame rate and battery life of smartphones;
- A new Microsoft Visual Studio extension for cross-platform games. It will simplify Android support for such titles. Functions are synchronized with Microsoft Azure PlayFab in real time;
- the development of Android games on the CryEngine engine will be available this summer;
- Game Package Registry for Unity is a package of Google APIs, including Google Play Billing, Play Instant, Play Asset Delivery, etc. The latter tool provides faster loading of game content;
- the auto-installation of games in which players have pre-registered has been announced. It is unclear when the company will launch this feature;
