The shelf of game engines has arrived. Amazon has introduced its own engine for creating Lumberyard games, developed on the basis of CryEngine.
The technology is positioned as a “graphics engine for professional game developers.” It is noted that its capacity is enough to create an AAA-quality project.
The engine supports development for Windows Vista, Windows 7, 8 and 10, as well as for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
You can develop games within Lumberyard in C++, Lua, as well as using the Flow Graph visual scripting tool.
Amazon claims that the service is free and that even if the game is commercially successful, the company will not take royalties from developers. However, the company stipulates that developers will be “responsible for any access to AWS (Amazon Web Services) services that occurs using IAM (Identity and Access Management) included in the Cloud Canvas configuration, or for any access that occurs using the AWS SDK for C++, along with any use of GameLift (backend solution for multiplayer games)”.
In other words, if developers want to save money by developing a game on Lumberyard, they will have to write the server and analytics themselves.
Twitch support is also built into the engine.
The CryEngine engine of Crytek became the technological basis of Lumberyard. The American retailer bought the rights to the engine last summer for an amount within $ 50-70 million.
