At a press conference held in Las Vegas on the eve of the opening of the largest consumer electronics show CES 2013, NVIDIA announced the Tegra 4 chip and the Project Shield game console running Android 4.1.
The gadget is executed in an unusual form factor. It looks like a gamepad with a 5-inch screen with a resolution of 1280×720 attached to it. The amount of internal memory has not yet been reported, but it is known that the device is equipped with a micro-SD slot.
An HDMI port is provided for displaying images on a large TV screen. As for the autonomy indicators, according to the developers, the battery is capable of providing 5-10 hours of play and 24 hours of HD video playback.
Interestingly, the device can be used not only to run Android games, but also as a receiver for streaming PC games from a computer equipped with a GeForce GTX 650 or higher graphics card. At a press conference, this mode was demonstrated using the example of Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Assassin’s Creed 3.
The approximate release date of Project Shield for sale in the USA and Canada is the second quarter of 2013. NVIDIA has not yet announced information about the price.
