Revenue

  • In the first half of the year, global mobile gaming revenue increased by 17.9% compared to 2020. This is a lot, considering that last year it also grew rapidly — by 25.5% in annual terms.
  • The main cash register was brought by App Store users. They spent $26 billion on games, which is 13.5% more than in the first half of 2020. Despite the increase in spending, the growth rate itself has slowed by half. For comparison, a year ago, gamers on iOS spent 26.5% more than in 2019 ($22.9 billion).
  • Google Play maintained a growth rate of 24.7%. In total, the expenses of Stora users on games for six months amounted to $ 18.7 billion.

  • According to analysts, revenue grew rapidly last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, now the market is returning to its usual state, so its growth rate is slowing down.
  • The most moneyed games of the half-year were Honor of Kings ($1.5 billion), PUBG Mobile ($1.5 billion) and Genshin Impact ($848 million).

Downloads

  • From January to June, mobile gamers downloaded games 28.1 billion times. This is 1.4% less compared to the same period in 2020. According to Sensor Tower, this is not surprising. As in the case of revenue growth, it’s all about record downloads last year due to the pandemic and lockdown, when people were forced to stay at home and look for new ways to have fun.
  • Downloads in the App Store fell by 22.8% year-on-year to 4.4 billion.
  • At the same time, downloads on Google Play increased by 3.9% to 23.7 billion. This may be due to the fact that Android smartphones are popular in those countries where the pandemic is still raging.

  • Three of the five most downloaded games were hyper-casual. Exceptions are Garena Free Fire and Among Us. Topped the top was Join Clash 3D from Supersonic Studios, which collected 115.6 million downloads worldwide.
