Sensor Tower: Americans have spent $2 billion on mobile RPGs over the past eight months

The genre of mobile RPG is the seventh largest at the box office in American stores. In the eight months of 2020, gamers’ spending on it increased by 33% and reached the $2 billion mark. This is the conclusion reached by Sensor Tower analysts in a new report.

The situation in the US market (January-August 2020)by August inclusive, mobile titles in the RPG genre earned $2 billion.

  • For comparison, in the same period of 2019, the revenue of these games amounted to $ 1.5 billion;

  • during the year, the number of mobile RPG downloads increased by 1.8% and reached 115 million installations;

  • it’s all about global quarantine, says Sensor Tower. American gamers got more free time and spent it playing games, thanks to which the latter greatly increased monetization and retention. How long the current situation will be protected depends on the US economy, analysts conclude.

RPG subgenre revenue data (USA, January-August 2020)

  • Squad RPG became the highest—grossing subgenre, collecting $850 million – 67% more than a year earlier;
  • However, Puzzle RPG games turned out to have the highest average income. According to Sensor Tower estimates, the average game of this subgenre earns about $ 11 million;
  • Idle RPG and survival simulators are the fastest growing subgenres. The revenue of each of them rose by 88% to $58 million and $132 million, respectively;

  • Squad RPG continues to lead, gaining 32 million installations. In addition, the subgenre has also become the fastest growing in this category — its downloads have increased by 37% compared to last year;
  • the first place in the number of average installations went to fighting games — 427 thousand downloads per game;
  • Puzzle RPG became the leading subgenre in terms of revenue from downloads — one download on average brings developers $47. Squad RPG took second place, and Idle RPG — third. Sensor Tower does not provide accurate LTV data for the last two genres.
