Apple may abandon support for 32-bit applications with the release of iOS 11, which will take place this fall.
If this happens, many outdated programs will no longer work on Apple mobile devices.
Information about the upcoming shutdown was provided by the well-known developer Steven Troughton-Smith. This data has not yet been officially confirmed by Apple, but Troughton-Smith said he heard about it “very clearly.”
Apple first started supporting 64-bit applications with the release of the iPhone 5 in September 2013. Apple has also required developers to submit applications with 64-bit support since February 2015.
In iOS 9, Apple started warning users that 32-bit apps could slow down the device.
Apple has been clearing the App Store of “problematic and abandoned” apps since September 2016. This month, the company removed more than 50 thousand programs from the store — almost 2.5 times more than was removed from the App Store in any other month.
