Next week, Google will launch a global system that will evaluate the age ratings of games and applications. A message about this appeared on the official blog of the company.
The system will be automated. Developers will be asked to answer questions about their app or game. Based on the answers, they will receive a rating of their project.
Interestingly, the system will automatically set a rating based on the relevant standards of the developer’s country. That is, a game rated in one country as suitable for, say, a six-year-old – will not necessarily be rated the same in another country.
“We know that cultural standards vary from country to country,” said Eunice Kim, product director at Google Play, in an interview with Venturebeat. – We pay attention to these differences, especially considering that our products are used by billions of users every day. We wanted to release the developers from this responsibility.”
The system will have security measures that will make sure that the rating of the application is correct. Google Play will monitor how developers evaluate their projects with the help of rating agencies from around the world.
Starting next week, all apps and games in the Play Store will be asked to pass the assessment.
In order to get a rating of their application, developers will need to do the following:
1) Log in to your Google Play Developer Console account;
2) select an application;
3) in the menu on the left, select Content Rating;
4) view the information about the questions and enter your e-mail;
5) click Continue;
6) select a category;
7) fill out the questionnaire;
8) click Calculate app rating;
9) on the page where the application rating is indicated, click on Apply rating to my app.
Google Play users will see the ratings changes in May.
