The success of the Nintendo Switch launch last year exceeded Nintendo‘s expectations. But the president of the company Tatsumi Kimishima (Tatsumi Kimishima) believes that the real tests for the Switch will begin in the second year of the console’s existence.

The head of Nintendo said this in an interview with the Japanese daily newspaper Mainichi.

According to Kimishima, in 2018, one of the main goals of Nintendo will be to increase the base of user owners, including at the expense of people who did not previously own game consoles.

In addition, Nintendo intends to actively support third-party studios that create games for Switch. This will add new titles and genres to the platform’s library.

Speaking about the importance of the second year, the president of Nintendo cited the sales history of the Nintendo Wii console as an example. Since its release in November 2006, more than 100 million Wii units have been sold worldwide, 20 million of which were sold in 2007.

Since the release of the Switch in March last year, Nintendo has already sold more than 10 million consoles, which exceeds the sales of the Nintendo Wii U, the company’s previous large console, for the entire time of its existence.
