Yesterday, September 25, the presentation of Oculus Connect 6 took place. We tell you what Facebook showed on it.

Mark Zuckerberg, head of Facebook

LiveMaps AR Project

Facebook is developing a headset with support for additional reality. The company stated that the project is in the early stages, but there are no details about it.

But it became known that Facebook is developing LiveMaps software specifically for the new headset. The software maps the real world to create a 3D model of the Earth. LiveMaps will be the basis for the “augmented reality of the future”, so, in fact, Facebook is working on a virtual space.

To create 3D maps, data obtained from 2.4 billion users of the social network will be used. Subsequently, these cards will be supported by special AR headsets and devices and superimposed on top of the real world.

Improved hand tracking in Oculus Quest

At the beginning of 2020, the Oculus Quest VR helmet will receive a new tracking system. It will allow you to track the position of the hands and fine motor skills of the player without controllers, sensors or special gloves. The system will recognize finger movements using cameras on the helmet itself and a new method of deep learning.

Note that the Oculus Quest, released on May 21, is already the most autonomous headset on the market. It is wireless and does not require a PC connection.

Oculus Link will Link Quest and Rift

However, Oculus Quest wires may still be needed. The Oculus Link function was presented at the exhibition. It will connect Quest with the Rift service: applications for the latter will be launched on VR glasses connected to a PC via a cable.

The new software will support most existing cables with a USB-C connector. Later, Oculus itself will throw special premium cables on the market.

The feature will be launched this year as part of the beta.

Oculus GO Apps — in Quest

And today, on September 26, Quest helmet owners will have access to a variety of applications that were developed for Oculus Go.

Horizon — social VR sandbox

Facebook has opened the acceptance of applications for beta testing of the Horizon VR game. This is a virtual reality sandbox game compatible with Oculus Quest.

In it, users will be able to build their own worlds, explore the worlds of other players, control virtual planes, chat, watch movies, etc.

The closed beta test will start in early 2020.
