The path to the heart of the mass consumer for modern VR technologies is still closed. This was stated by the creator of the Oculus Rift Palmer Lucky (Palmer Luckey) in his blog.

A complete immersion in virtual reality, an exceptionally vivid, exciting experience — all this, according to Lucky, existing VR gadgets cannot provide. Experiments with reducing the price of them have shown that millions of people have an interest in them, but not everyone can be carried away by the acquisition for a long time. A large number of purchased gadgets and settles on the shelves at home, and, of course, in this situation, the modern VR industry cannot reach its full potential.

Even if you give away VR devices to people for free, it will not help attract a permanent mass audience, Lucky believes. In order for virtual reality to become an integral part of everyday life, VR technologies must deliver unforgettable sensations and experiences to the user. An ideal (and yet non-existent) product will help to achieve a complete and absolutely exciting immersion of players in virtual reality, similar to a waking dream.

If the free headset was really that good, then paired with good content it would instantly revolutionize.

The lack of a product on the market that could give people a fundamentally new experience of getting acquainted with virtual reality does not allow us to significantly increase the VR user base. Lucky believes that an audience of 50 million people in the next two years is the ceiling. And it can be achieved only if very serious investments are made in the industry. Whereas recently investors do not want to place their capital in the VR segment.

Lucky is sure that VR can potentially become the most important technology of the future and the ideal gaming platform. It’s just that humanity has not yet managed to create a gadget capable of proving this.
