Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot does not see a disaster in Sony's decision to stop producing discs for new PlayStation games after 2028. He stated this during a conference call with investors and analysts.
During the conversation, Guillemot reminded that PCs abandoned discs long ago, transitioning to a digital distribution model, and everyone coped with it. Moreover, the PC gaming segment is currently thriving.
Guillemot believes that the console segment will also adapt to the changes.
“There is currently some expected pressure on console costs, and the transition to fully digital versions will help make the devices more accessible. There are both pros and cons. However, in our opinion, it will not significantly impact the industry,” Guillemot added.
At Ubisoft, the vast majority of game sales now come from digital rather than discs or cartridges. As a reminder, in its first fiscal quarter report, the company reported that digital editions accounted for 80.6% of its net receipts for the period, or 206.2 million euros. This figure has remained at a similar level for the past several years.
