The corporation was accused of failing to comply with the Digital Market Act.
As the European Commission explained, Google Play's rules significantly restrict app developers. In particular, developers cannot freely inform users about alternative—and often more beneficial—platforms for purchases outside the store. However, according to the law, they should have this opportunity.
The fine for this violation amounted to 430 million euros.
This isn't the only fine the European Commission has recently imposed on Google. In parallel, it also fined the corporation an additional 460 million euros due to the operation of the Google search engine—it was found that Google's search results prioritized its own services, which also violates the law.
Google now has 60 days to set everything right. If the requirements are not met, it faces periodic fines of up to 5% of the corporation's annual global turnover.
