The European Commission has approved two bills to combat the monopolies of large platform holders. They will also affect Google and Apple, which will have to comply with the new set of rules.

We are talking about the adoption of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Digital Services Act (DSA). According to the European Commission, they will help create a “safer and more open digital space based on respect for fundamental rights” throughout the EU.

Platform holders controlling significant market shares will be required to:
▫️allow downloading applications from third-party stores or directly via the Internet;
▫️provide access to third-party payment systems;
▫️allow users to delete any applications and abandon the main services provided by the platform holders;
▫️do not promote your own products and services to the detriment of other developers’ applications;
▫️report to the EU about all your mergers and acquisitions.

Large companies are unlikely to like the decision of the European Commission. As lawyer Richard Hoeg noted, “Apple will sue over this until the thermal death of the universe occurs.”

In case of violation of the new rules, companies face a fine of up to 10% of their global revenue for the year. In case of repeated violations, the fine will increase to 20%.
